Tavistock AFC 2

WITH the League Cup quarter-final against Plymouth Parkway, next, Tavistock manager Stuart Henderson made a few changes to the starting line up, with Reece Shanley and Liam Prynn leading the front line. The Lambs created the first real scoring opportunity in the 14th minute when a long ball by Lewis Daw opened up the home defence putting Tiegan Rosenquest in on goal but his shot was turned away for a corner kick which was cleared.

Six minutes later another corner kick from Daw headed inches wide of the target. The Lambs were having the larger share of possession with the home team limited to counter attacks. Borthwick in the visitors’ goal dealt with any crosses that came into the penalty area.

On the half hour another great long ball by man of the match Dan Evans put Liam Prynn in but he dragged his shot well wide of the target. Tyler Elliot then had a shot from 22 yards turned away for a corner kick by Zak Roberts in the home goal. The keeper then made a fine save to deny Josh Robins from opening the scoring.

The Lambs got the deserved breakthrough two minutes before the interval when a corner was taken with a short pass to Rosenquest  who waltzed pass two defender before squaring the ball back from the dead ball line for Shanley who slotted the ball home from four yards.

The second half started at a fast pace with the home team forcing a corner kick in the opening minutes. From this Cheshire shot well over the bar when well placed. Robins then made a terrific tackle to deny Tolstoy from levelling the scores while O’Hagan headed over from the corner kick.

Just before the hour mark, Luke Brown and Jack Crago replaced Elliot and Prynn. They were soon in the action with Crago having a shot from inside the penalty brilliantly blocked by O’Hagan.

The home team having frustrated the Lambs with their tactics, and some really aggressive tackling, gradually got a foot hold in the game, and had their best spell. Ben Cross was called on to make a terrific challenge to deny Tolstoy from levelling the scores. However with the Lambs defence and some really confident handling by keeper Sam Borthwick they held firm.

The Lambs deservedly doubled their advantage in the 88th minute when a good move saw Luke Brown and Crago combined well, to provide a great pass to Taillan Burns made not mistake as fired home a terrific shot pass the impressive Newquay goal keeper Roberts who had an outstanding game producing a number of really good saves to keep the Lambs from adding to their goal tally.

Although not at their best the Lambs recorded another victory to maintain their momentum. It was a lovely afternoon, but the conditions, with a stiff wind and difficult playing surface the team found it difficult to produce their normal free flowing football.

Tavistock 1

Bodmin Town 0

A GOOD sized crowd witnessed a terrific cup tie against Bodmin Town. The game flowed from end to end throughout the 90 minutes.

Tavistock came close to opening the scoring in the third minute when  a raid down the left saw Josh Robins fire a great cross into the penalty area with Josh Grant’s overhead kick went inches over the cross bar.

Two minutes later the Lambs did have the ball in the net but the effort was ruled out as Grant was adjudged to have fouled a defender before slotting the ball home. Back came Bodmin three minutes later when a free kick by Reed was tipped over the bar by Josh Oak. In the 14th minute Bodmin keeper May made a terrific save turning a fierce shot from Jack Crago away for a corner kick. Oak was then called on to make a smart save to deny Brokenshire from opening the scoring.

The Lambs took the lead in the 19th minute when another terrific passing move from the back through midfield found Grant who fired home a terrific shot from 18 yards, giving May in the Bodmin goal no chance of saving.

Back came Bodmin with Reed testing the home defence with another fine effort. Tiegan Rosequest then had a powerful shot deflected away for a corner kick. Bodmin were then awarded a free kick just outside the penalty area, but May’s fine effort was turned over the bar by Oak, for a corner kick, which was cleared.

The visitors were awarded another free 25 yards out; Evans shot was blocked, the ball fell to Reed but he dragged his shot well wide of the target. Just before the interval the Lambs had a penalty appeal turned down as Grant appeared to be pushed over in the penalty area, as he was about to shoot. The home team closed out the half with a single goal lead.

The home side started the second half at a brisk pace and two minute in Tallinn Burns saw his fine effort go inches over the bar. The Lambs missed a great opportunity to double their lead in the 52nd minute when a terrific cross from the left flashed across the six yard box inches out of the reach of the on rushing Grant and Rosenquest.  The Lambs were now on top and created more scoring opportunities but Burns, Rosenquest and Grant fired inches wide. Tavistock should have made the game safe, but having survived this period Bodmin began to get back in the game, as Oak was forced to make a good save to deny Brokenshire.

The Lambs then had another penalty appeal turned down midway through the half, as keeper May clattered into Rosenquest but the referee gave the offence just outside the area. The free kick was cleared.

The home team were still dangerous on the counter attack and Warren Daw went close with his fine effort. Bodmin continued to press forward with Slateford and Colwell both having efforts well saved by Oak in the home goal. The Lambs’ defence held firm to see the game out to make it through to the quarter-final.

This was a terrific game with both teams playing some delightful football; it was a great advert for SW Peninsula Football.

The Lambs just edged the contest over the 90 minutes and deserved to go through.

Man of the match goes to captain Lewis Daw who kept danger man Adam Carter in check throughout the game.
