Okehampton Ladies' Firsts 3

Plymouth Marjons 2 3

ON a rare sunny afternoon, Okehampton were hoping for their first win of the season but it was not to be.

Marjons were quick off the mark pressing forward in numbers causing Okehampton's defence problems. Following a run of pressure, Marjons were rewarded with a goal. Okehampton had several break away attacks but were unable to convert. Marjons went on to add to their tally by scoring twice more before the break.

After a positive half time talk from captain Kim Davey, Okehampton were raring to fight back. Their determination was rewarded almost instantly. Jo Drake and Davey worked tirelessly in the middle to deliver the ball forward to player of the match Jo Moppett who pushed it through the goalie's legs to score their first goal.

The second came quickly after, from a penetrating run from Drake who sprinted the length of the pitch leaving Marjons in her wake. After passing three defenders, she slipped the ball to Moppett who beat the goalie and walked the ball over the line to make sure the second goal was secured. Within ten minutes, Okehampton were on the up and looking for the win.

Marjons, however, had other ideas and pressed forward again. Okehampton got numbers behind the ball and excellent tackling from Okehampton's defence Jane Jones, Rachel Hammett, Katie Adams and Carol Taylor closed down all challenges and squandered any chance of a goal. Support from Hannah Whiteley, Louise Weller and Amanda Sim enabled Okehampton to clear their lines.

Okehampton battled on and a powerful ball from Davey found Moppett in the D resulting in Moppett scoring her hat-trick with a fabulous shot into the roof of the net.

Marjons piled on the pressure for the remaining minutes and some diving saves from goalie Shannon Osman made sure Marjons were not going to add to their tally.

n This week Okehampton Ladies are away to Plymouth University.
