THREE enthusiastic teenagers from three different sports clubs based in Tavistock came together to form a Tavistock United team to compete in the Freak Events team Triathlon on Saturday. The event was based on an Olympic distance triathlon with each athlete competing in one of the triathlon disciplines of swimming, cycling and running. Keiran Rookes, Tavistock Swimming Club captain, got the team off to a fantastic start, completing the 1,500m open water swim in the beautiful but cold Roadford Lake in a time of 21.57 minutes, which included a steep run up the grassy bank into transition. Keiran handed over the timing chip to Jordan Channon from Tavistock Wheelers North Shore Gallery Cycling Club, who took on the 40km undulating bike route with relish, doing two laps around the edge of Roadford Lake in 67.07 minutes. Jordan then passed the timing chip over to James Best, Tavistock Athletic Club, who ran a superb 10km off-road distance around the country park on a mixture of road and track paths in a time of 39.15 minutes. An overall time of 2.10.10 hours put the boys in a well deserved first place winning the prize money of £300 — almost eleven minutes ahead of second place. Thanks to Freak Events for putting on a great event and well done to James Best on his selection in the English Fell Running team. n Pictured are Keiran Rookes, James Best and Jordan Channon.
