MORE than 40 badminton players of all ages and abilities from across the West Devon area entered the annual OCRA Sport and Fitness Week Badminton Tournament in Okehampton. Each of the competitions was keenly played for with many of the games only being decided in the final few points. The final of the singles, played over the best of three ends, went to the third set with Lucy Cooper gaining the advantage over her brother Tom. The ladies' doubles competition was an all Tavyside Badminton affair with Lucy Cooper and Olivia Walker playing Celine Conley and Ellie Drage. The opening points of the final game were tentative but, in the last few points, Lucy and Olivia's tactics proved to be the better. The men's doubles saw the juniors take on the seniors — with the juniors proving the better with their court coverage and stroke placement: Tom Cooper and Jonathan Stoeker taking the crown over Keith Clark and Kevin Anstey. In the mixed doubles competition two pairs from Tavyside Badminton contested the final. It was not until the last couple of points that Alan Berry and Celine Conley moved into a decisive lead over Jonathan Stoeker and Ellie Drage to earn the bragging rights for the coming year. OCRA run a Badminton Club on a Monday evening from 7pm at Parklands Leisure Centre, Okehampton and new players are always welcome.
