REG Toms from Bratton Clovelly has come right out of the traps to land himself a spot with the English Clay Pigeon Shooting team. The former owner of a gun shop in Okehampton was delighted with the news that he has been selected to represent England in a Home Counties International tournament to be held at Beverley Clay Pigeon Shooting Club in East Yorkshire on August 15/16. He will be competing against the best from Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. Reg, aged 67, has been shooting most of his life although only been specialising in the Olympic Trap discipline for the past four years since retiring. Now he has been chosen as one of two England shooters in the veteran class team at the two day event. England will be represented by a team of nine men, two ladies, two juniors (under 21) along with the two veterans. In order to qualify Reg competed against other marksmen in a national event at a range in Nuthampstead near Stevenage in Hertfordshire where over two days he fired at 200 targets. His efforts won him third spot and a silver medal in veterans (plus 55) section. The high number of clays he downed also won him an England call-up. Asked how he felt when he had confirmation of being asked to represent his country, Reg told the Times: 'I felt like 5 years-old at Christmas when Father Christmas has given you what you want for a present. It was terrific. A day you don't forget like passing your driving test. It was quite a pleasant surprise.'
