TAVISTOCK based Drake Judo Club are continuing their impressive year with six young members in action at last Sunday’s British Championships for 10 and 11 Year olds.
All gave a superb account of themselves with all achieving top finishes.
Tavistock College’s Phoebe Frise achieved a respectable fifth place after some extremely tough contests, the highlight being a victory with a ‘body drop’ Tai Otoshi win.
Also on the day Tavistock Primary’s Erin Hopkins, aged 10, trying to emulate her sister Alanna who had won a bronze in 2017 at the same event, achieved in style with a huge ‘major outer sweep’ O-Soto-Gari. In the boys’ group, Tavistock Primary’s Joe Walker made his debut at the National Championships. Joe, who had suffered a serious hand injury put up a tremendous performance finishing in the top 10.
Drake Judo Club chairman and coach Ross Taylor said: ‘Tavistock has been a hotbed for Judo in the UK over the last two years. In that time Drake Judo Club has produced national champions, Commonwealth champions and major medals with players who all live in Tavistock and the surrounding areas.
‘Mr (Shaun) Hulbert at Tavistock College has been extremely supportive in working in partnership with us in helping the young people and children realise their potential.’
