ON June 2, 2010 during a driving holiday around 13 American states and on top of the Empire State Building in New York, Phil King and Dotty Allan got engaged after Phil got down on one knee on the top floor.
The couple decided that wanted a date to remember so the date of December 12, 2012 (12-12-12) was set. The theme of the wedding was red in honour of Dotty's son George, which is also the colour of the running club Dotty is chair of the Bere Alston Trekkers (BATs).
The bride, who travelled into Tavistock in the Bere Alston carnival float on the back of a tractor, was given away by her son. In true running style, the bridge and groom were married by stop-watch to ensure that they were pronounced man and wife at 12 minutes past 12, the same time that the bells rang in St Eustachius' church. The couple left the registry office under a guard of honour made up of old running trainers held high in the air by more club members.
The wedding breakfast was held in the dining car of the Tamar Belle railway carriage in Bere Ferrers with an evening buffet at the Olde Plough
Local primary school children lined the pavement to wave the wedding party out of the village.
The wedding was finished off on the Saturday evening with a community wedding party in the village hall for 220 people.
Dotty and Phil thank everybody for making their day special.
The happy couple will be going on honeymoon in May 2013 where they will drive through 12 other American states — although Dotty plans to run in most of them.
