Western Counties West

Tavistock 14

Penryn 34

ALL the good work of last week's win against Okehampton was undone as Tavistock slumped to another defeat.

The visitors made a blistering start as they sped in to the corner for first try after just a minute played. The home side responded but Dan Luffman was driven out after a good run.

The visitors second try came after some mishandling by the Tavistock backs in the opposition's half saw them pick up the loose ball and sprint away to touchdown under the posts.

A long clearance was picked by Andy Griffiths who charged into the opposition where, from the ruck, Rich West found touch. From the resulting line out, some quick handling saw the visitors break down the field. Dan Oner thought he had prevented a try with a saving tackle but the off-load went straight to the supporting player who went over.

A charging run from his own half saw Charlie Furnival break through several tackles to reach the 22 but the attack petered out.

Tavistock reorganised after they lost fly half West with an injury. After a series of rucks, the home side opened their account as a slick pass from Ewan Smith to Furnival, who burst through the visitors' defence to go in under the posts. Smith converted.

The half closed with Tavistock in the ascendency but they could not break through.

Tavistock kept the pressure on up in the early stages of the second half with the back row of Oner, Mark Friend and Hallam Bourton doing some good work in the loose.

Good handling enabled Simon Braithwaite to break down the wing but he was tripped as he chased his chip through which resulted in a yellow card for Penryn.

Tavistock's second try came from Ben Hadfield who was on the end of a long pass from the recovered West to go in at the corner which he duly converted himself.

Penryn struck back and a chip through enabled their winger to outpace the home defence and get the vital touchdown. Another try soon followed as they went in at the corner.

The home side battled hard but the final score came following a quick tap penalty by the visitors enabled them to go over in the corner.

Tavistock tried to salvage something from the game and from the final play, good work by Braithwaite set up Friend but he was tackled out.
