MORE than 25 years ago several ladies at Tavistock Golf Club  decided to form a lady veterans’ section for those who had reached the age of 60!   Over the decades the numbers have grown and the section is now a very active and competitive part of the club.

Throughout the season there are trophy competitions, county and club matches as well home and away matches with other golf clubs.

The section has been lucky in that over the years there has been many able and inspirational captains and the present captain Shirley Trevena has certainly been no exception.

In a day superbly organised by Shirley more than 40 ladies played in the 25th anniversary three ball better ball and many more joined in the celebrations.

The three ball better ball was won by Sally Hills, Barbara Chalk and Jean Thomas with 74 points.

The Anniversary Salver, donated by Shirley, was won by June Kendall with 35pts for the best individual score.

Lady captain Gail Reed thanked Shirley for such successful and memorable day and wished them well for the next 25 years!

Thirty three teams took part in the ladies’ 3BBB with the Tavistock team of Nicky Gawman, Gill Jarvis and Lauren Chapman taking the honours with 78pts.  Jayne Day, Jane Begley and Julie Brookes (Saunton) were second with 76 pts on count back from the Tehidy team Chris Williams, Rowena Lowson and Amanda East and Tavistock’s Jayne Wright, Kayleigh Cann and Donna Gage.

Nearest the pin on the seventh: Fran Horton (Tavistock)  nearest the pin in two on the  fourth: Julie Brooks (Saunton).

The men are doing well in county matches. In the Palariat Trophy Tavistock are through to the quarter finals after beating Torquay 3-2 at Woodbury Park also through to the quarter finals are the Parker trophy team.
