TAVISTOCK Seconds chalked up their first win of the season against local rivals Yelverton.
Yelverton batted first and got off to a solid start, with an opening partnership of 72 between experienced pairing Chris Cottrell and Brian Spear, before Andy Gauler trapped Cottrell, lbw for 19; he was soon followed by the big hitting Henry Webster, who fell lbw to Gauler for 5, having ran his partner Spear out the previous over for 34. Yelverton recovered to 115, before he fell to a catch by Webber off the bowling of Jacob Staig. This was Staig’s first senior wicket and one that he thoroughly deserved after bowling a tidy nine over spell. The fight was then taken to Tavistock by Gerry Keen and James Casey and although wickets fell, to Willitts and the varied bowling of Webber, Yelverton eventually ended up on 189-7, with the last wicket to fall to youngster Jack Bellamy, who deserved his first senior wicket for the club.
Tavistock in reply got to 34 before Webber was caught behind for 18 off the bowling of Hutchins. However this was the precursor to a great stand of 67 between Phil Bees and Sam Willitts, which got Tavistock over the 100 mark, before Willitts was run out for a stylish 33. Bees continued to be the mainstay of the innings, before he fell caught and bowled for an excellent 50 to Cottrell.
Andy Gauler (24 not out), with the assistance of Anderson and Coe, got Tavistock over the finishing line, to record a hard fought win. Apart from the win the real pleasing aspect for Tavistock were the bowling performances of Staig and Bellamy and the bravery of Jack Steel in the field.
