EVERYBODY at Tavistock Swimming Club is absolutely thrilled after Nathaniel Rookes won his category at the Devon Sports Award ceremony at Sandy Park in Exeter on Friday. Across all sports in the county,  Nathaniel was announced as the recipient of the Young Coach of the Year Award.

A delighted club president Sue Dunstan said on behalf of the club: ‘This is a tremendous achievement, confirming what we all already know about this remarkable and talented young man.

‘We are also extremely pleased to report that club captain, Ieuan Noakes, was a close runner up as Young Volunteer of the Year. We all recognise the huge commitment these two worthy finalists devote to TSC in their quiet unassuming way. Neither of them encouraged these nominations, each being far more interested in helping our young members to progress and succeed as enthusiastic and competitive swimmers.

‘Nathaniel and Ieuan remain very modest, shunning the limelight, but we are sure all club members will want to congratulate them on these amazing and well earned achievements.

‘The committee and our successful head coach James Lake are delighted that Nathaniel and Ieuan’s success has continued to help put Tavistock Swimming Club further on the map.’

Ten club representatives attended the ceremony which was compered by BBC Spotlight’s Jenny Walrond. The guest speaker was triple round the world yachtsman and adventurer Conrad Humphries who grew up and initially gained his passion for sailing in Exmouth. His talk including both setbacks and huge achievements was inspirational,  encouraging young people to follow their dreams and strive to overcome obstacles that come their way.
