THE first half of September has been a busy time at Tavistock Golf Club.  The popular four ball better ball team event attracted a large field.

Topping the list of winners was the Tavistock team of Max Clarke, Belinda McSherry, Wendy and Gareth George with 83 pts.  Tony Cooper, Julie Harding, Dawn and Graham Dennis (Tavistock) claimed second place with 80 pts on countback from Alan Gawman, Lyn Swift, Nicky and George Gawman also from Tavistock. Tavistock golfers also won the longest drives and nearest the pin.

In the ladies' closed meeting event the Molly Muirhead salvers for the best gross scores were won by Gilly Jarvis with gross 78 (silver) and Gail Reed had a gross 97 in the bronze division. Topping division one with a nett 71 was Bridie Sampson, second Wendy George nett 73, third Liz Lyndon nett 75 on countback from Penny Deakin. 

In division two Val Jarman had an excellent nett 69 to win the Chris Leach Trophy for the best nett score. Second was Jenny Kay with nett 75, third Sam Avens with nett 76 on countback from Joy Harrison.  Strong winds and lightning fast greens resulted in reductions only in the monthly medal played in conjunction with the Grandmother's Cup. Kate Harding won the cup with a nett 76 with runner up Shirley Trevenna on nett 78.

In the men's Basil Steer Trophy top of the leader board was Steve Somerset from Boringdon Hall with nett 69 on countback from George Gawman and Graham Ruth with Mark Ingram on nett 71.  The winner of the trophy with the lowest gross score was Graham Ruth on countback from Alan Gawman. 

In the men's veterans  George Bailey six clubs and putter competition Ken Cole in division one had nett 68, second was Paul Congo with nett 71.  In division two the winner was Peter Anglis with a nett 68, on countback from Ken Cole, second John Greening with nett 70 on countback from John Thewlis.  

l In round one of the mens' club championships Alan Gawman is leading the scratch competition with gross 69.  With a nett 66 Danvers Hough leads the handicap competition with Dave Burge just two shots behind.  The next round is on Saturday.
