A MEMBER member of Tavistock Golf Club for more than 30 years, Wally Hammond was a very popular and active member of the club and the men's veterans section. It was in his memory that the club and men vets played for the Wally Hammond Plate.
Club captain Richard Burrows and vets captain Dan Pratley were both delighted that so many had supported the event and that Mrs Pat Hammond had kindly agreed to present the plate to the winning team. They both agreed that Wally would have appreciated the great spirit in which the match was played but probably not so pleased with the result — a win for the club 13 and a half to 5 and a half!
In the men's Chinn Stableford scoring was tight in both divisions one and two. In division one Paul Whitby had 35 points on countback from James MacFarlane and Graham Norton. In division two, Keith Maskell had 35 on countback from Maurice Craze, Ken Cole and Howard Jenkins. First in division three was Jas Singh with 39pts, second Roger Short 33 and third with 32 was Ian Nye.
The ladies three ball better ball open was played benign conditions. The winning team with 74pts were Jayne Wright, Hilary Picton (Tavistock) and Alison Down (Saunton). With 71 in second place were C Conners, P Clifton and A Samuel (Falmouth/St Enodoc). In third place from Falmouth with 69 were Debbie Hunt, Lyn Dickinson and Mo Hammond; fourth were the Tavistock team of Teresa Hughes, Carolyn Crawford and Liz Loosmore with 68 on countback from Bridie Sampson, Liz Lyndon and Hazel Phipps also from Tavistock.
Due to the awful weather a small field played in the monthly medal played in conjunction with the Goddard Smith Trophy. Jayne Wright won the trophy with a nett 77 on countback from Bridget Luckham.
