THE first OCRA organized Tavistock Area Primary Schools Bouldering Competition was held at Milton Abbot Indoor Climbing Barn on January 10.
Nine teams from eight schools took part, with great encouragement and guidance from Joe, Naomi and Brian of the Climbing Barn.
Mhairi McCall from Okehampton Recreation and Cultural Association said: ‘There were 15 different routes to the top of the boulder, some easy some very difficult and the children had great fun conquering these routes.’
Ten points were scored for an ascent made on first attempt, seven points for second attempt, three points for third attempt and one point for anything after that.
Milton Abbot, Tavistock, Horrabridge A and B, St Andrew’s, Gulworthy, St Peter’s and Lamerton all gave their best with the Tavistock team of William Elliott, Oscar Slater, Maxwell Haddy, Olivia De Wolf, Tilly Young and Emily Hutchinson ‘coming out on top’ and winning the gold medals. Horrabridge A (Poppy Lakeman, Isobel Boulle, Kitty Harland, Alex Grenardo, Josh Brownlow and Henry Whitwell) were second and Bea Medd, Scarlett Mammatt, Daisy Wilson, William Stacey, Mackenzie McLaughlin and Charlie White of Milton Abbot were third.
OCRA’s Mhairi McCall said: ‘Everyone agreed that the event had been a great success and a huge thank you to the Climbing Barn for being so welcoming and for setting such an enjoyable competition for the schoolchildren. We’ll be back!’
