ALL was calm and the sun came out at Castle Drogo for the first West Devon Primary Schools cross country of the season.

Representatives from Okehampton, St Peter’s, Chagford, St Andrew’s, South Tawton, Milton Abbot, Boasley Cross, Lew Trenchard, Whitchurch, Bridestowe, Mary Tavy and Brentor and Exbourne schools all competed in the 1.5 mile course around the picturesque Castle Drogo grounds.

The boys ran first with the girls giving their loud support on the start and finish line and it was Nicolas Maczugowski of St Peter’s who finished first, followed by Tom Perkins of Bridestowe, Stan W of Okehampton A then two Chagford boys, Henry Hassell and Ben Waterman.

It was the turn of the girls next with Holly Cole of Lew Trenchard leading them home, followed by Daisy Rowe and Sophia Caylor-Owen of Chagford then Lara Dix and Tess Hopes of St Peter’s.

The children went off to take part in some outdoor activities while the team results were worked out.

The Woodside Trust and Castle Drogo rangers and volunteers kept the athletes busy ‘sawing logs’, making ‘adders’ and crowns and the OCRA coaches ran fencing, ball skills, multi-skills and running stations. There was also a scavenger hunt in the garden.

The team results were announced and presentation of the medals took place with thanks being extended to Paula Clarke and her team from the National Trust. A great morning had been had by all the children and adults attending.
