TAVISTOCK based Brit Spirit Martial Arts entered a small team to take part in the UK-ITF National Taekwon-do Champion-ships, which were held this year in Exeter.

The group of seven competitors, ranging from juniors to adults and novices to black belts, came away with seven medals between them —continuing the club’s impressive record of competition success.

The tournament drew in the top competitors from across the UK as well as visiting teams from the European Union, all hoping to improve their rankings in the run-up to the World Championships, which are being hosted by UK-ITF in Brighton later this year.

Brit Spirit’s chief instructor, Peter Smith, was also an official at the event.

He told the Times: ‘I am very pleased with this accomplishment and our team can be rightly proud of their achievements.

‘National championship medals are always hard fought for and this year was particularly competitive with the World Championships coming up.

‘Normally we would have to travel a long way to take part in a competition at this level, but this one was right on our doorstep and presented a great opportunity for some of our younger members to experience a major tournament atmosphere.

‘This was another good result for our little club and we are now developing the core of what promises to be a winning competition squad.’

The club, now celebrating its’ sixth year in Tavistock, is also featured in Martial Arts Illustrated magazine this month where Peter gives an exclusive interview on a range of topics covering his 30 years experience within the martial arts world.
