Okehampton Cycle Club's Brentor Road Races held on July 28 in blustery and showery conditions attracted a good field and provided an exciting day of racing around the five mile circuit starting from Brentor.

There was a record entry for the category 3/4 race. Nearly 70 riders took part and came from as far afield as Bristol. Tavistock had the largest team with seven riders in the field and they worked really hard over the 40 mile race which comprised eight laps of the five mile circuit from Brentor — Iron Railings — Pitland Corner —Brentor.

First off was the third and fourth category, 41 mile mens regional B event with 80 riders lining up at the start.

A well timed solo effort by Josh Creet (Fifth Floor) at the start of the fourth lap proved decisive, establishing a minute lead which he maintained to the finish despite a spirited chase in which Tavistock Wheelers riders were prominent.

In the closing laps Simon Dawe (Bristol Road Club) slipped away on the last to finish second, clear of the peleton who were left to fight out the lower placings in a mass sprint that saw Steve Thomas (Bristol Road Club) home in third. Best placed local riders were Daniel Strong and Chris Knott of Tavistock Wheelers fifth and eighth respectively.

Run concurrently with the B event the 25mile ladies race was dominated by Exeter Wheelers.

By the end of the second lap the field had split with a group of five riders at the front. Matilde Pauls and Heidi Vile (Exeter Wheelers) drew clear over the remaining laps to finish first and second respectively followed up by Cath Newton (Newquay Velo) in third.

The National B event held in the afternoon saw a field of 45 riders take to the line for the 65 mile race. An early attack from Thomas Baylis (Mid Devon CC) was the catalyst for a five man break-away which included Ben Davis (Bristol RC), Colin Parry (Spin Rotor Primal) and Tristan Robbins (Cardiff JIF).

The group built up a lead rising to over a minute as the field behind them split. But an eight strong chasing group gradually chased them down with only Colin Parry and Ben Davis managing to stay clear.

A late move by George Pym (Spin Rotor Primal) enabled him to bridge the gap to his team mate Colin Parry who crossed the finish line first ahead of Pym and Davis.
