Tavistock Sir Francis Drake Bowling Club held its opening day for the outdoor season on Saturday.

Unfortunately, due to the adverse weather over recent months, it was not possible for any play to take place on the green.

However, the Mayor of Tavistock, Councillor Philip Sanders, and his consort (Mrs Jan Smallacombe) attended along with 48 bowlers.

The mayor, as president of the club, officially opened  the green by bowling the first wood of the season.  Following this, a ceremony took place to unveil a wooden bench which had been installed in memory of John Timmins, who sadly died last year, as a tribute to his tremendous support of the club over many years.

Everyone then retired to the clubhouse for tea and, despite not being able to play, enjoyed a pleasant afternoon.
