WHEN members of Bere Alston Bowling Club were asked to vote on a proposal to reduce the annual subscription from £65 to £50, they voted overwhelmingly against the proposal and instead they wished to see more money spent on general refurbishments.

An astonished chairman, Cliff Dyer, said: ‘Stranger things might have happened but I don’t know where and when!’

Cliff reported on a highly successful year both on the playing and financial front and thanked all concerned for the healthy situation the club finds itself.

He also congratulated Andy Hurford on becoming captain. On the playing front one bowler, Colin Squire, stood head and shoulders above all others by scooping five of the seven club championship trophies.

Trophy winners: Men’s championship, Liverton trophy, West View trophy, C Squire. Two wood championship, K Whitting. Handicap championship, K Bellchambers. Pairs championship, B Hamilton and C Squire. Triples championship, J Dunkeld, R Rowe, C Squire.
