CUTTING a groove in the Devon bowling world is a young Tavistock player who has his sights on county honours in the near future.

Luis Inacio, a pupil at Tavistock College, is a member of Bere Alston Short Mat Bowling Club.

Such has been his progress that the club entered Luis for the U18s county singles.

Although Luis is only 14 he played really well at the competition that was held at ISCA in Exeter last month, and bowled himself to the final — an accomplishment he achieved for the second year running. On the way he won four matches - narrowly losing 8 to 7 on the last end.

Luis, who lives in Tavistock and also plays for Tavistock Golf Club's junior team, first became involved in bowls when his next door neighbour, Jim Finch, took him an open day at Bere Alston BC and he has not looked back since.

He said that he has met some lovely people at the club and dismissed the claim that bowls was 'an old person's sport.'

Luis refuted that by joking: 'It's really a young person's sport, that older people just happen to play!'

He added: 'It takes some time to get used to and it was a year before I really started to get the hang of it. What I like about bowls is that it is a great challenge and you have to be quite accurate and get the bowl spot on.'

Luis is now looking forward to more competitions held in Exeter next month.
