ON Saturday, husband and wife Trekkers Martin and Hilary Head took part in The Smuggler’s Scuttler, a half marathon organised by Bys Vyken Events. This was a tough off road out-and-back race between Land’s End and Cape of Cornwall.
Runners had to collect contraband at Cape Cornwall (rum, treasure and tea) and return to Lands End with them; failure to do so resulted in time penalties. Fancy dress was strongly encouraged and the event saw many pirates out on the coast path in the blisteringly hot sunshine. Martin finished in 2 hours 53 minutes 46 seconds followed by Hilary in 4.10.15.
Closer to home on the same day, the BATs took on the Muskie Madness 10k hosted by the Plymouth Musketeers.
The first male BAT over the line was Paul Ashton, running with wife Debbie, both finishing in 1.07.47. The first lady BAT was Tanya Argue in an unofficial time of 1.06.30, followed by Mel Greaves 1.08.08. Jim Medhurst debuting for the club and running his first 10k race finished in 1.10.12, Natasha Hingston 1.16.12, Shaun Hingston 1.18.37, Samantha Harte-Latremouille 1.20.13, Dominika Nawalany 1.21.25 and Fiona Maddock 1.27.45.
Northern BAT Andy Cowden ran in the Run The Alderley Edge Bypass 10k in Cheshire where 2,000 runners enjoyed/endured baking sunshine along the sun trap of a road with the only shade briefly provided by the few bridges en route. A new addition to this event was live music along the course to spur the runners on and helping Andy to finish in a time of 50.06 coming in 456th and 18th out of 64 in his age group.
