Carlsberg South West Peninsula division one East
Plymstock Utd 4
Okehampton Argyle 6
THIS game turned out to be a real goalfest at Dean Cross as both sides showed their attacking flair in the second half.
Okehampton played some good football going forward but the defence looked shaky all afternoon and although Argyle deserved this victory against their lowly hosts, Plymstock certainly gave them a fright.
Argyle took time to settle and Plymstock took the early initiative. After ten minutes, a good move by the home side saw the Okes' keeper Craig Mulholland unable to hold on to a fierce close range shot and the U's James Yates fired home the loose ball.
Okehampton made several threatening moves down the left with Luke Alden prominent. The equaliser always looked on the cards and it came just before the interval when Alden was brought down from behind in the box and Dale Chadwick despatched the spot kick.
The second half began at a blistering pace and six goals were scored in a 15 minute period.
Argyle looked like they were going to run away with the game as they went into a 3-1 lead within six minutes o the restart. Their midfsield started to produce the passing movements they are capable of and the Plymstock defence were under constant pressure.
The second goal came when Jack English burst clear on the right and lifted in a pin point cross to Ed Squire who finished with a bullet header. Three minutes later, Toby Gostling played a perfectly weighted ball over the U's defence for Steve Madge to run on to and fire past the keeper.
Plymstocke showed their fighting spirit however and straight from the kick off, the Argyle defence looked all at sixes and sevens with a high ball into the box and Yates added his second to reduce the arrears. Argyle came back again and Ed Squire fastened onto a ball from Jack English to fire home from the edge of the box and restore the visitors two goal lead.
Once again, Argyle's defence were caught cold from the restart and a minute later, Yates was able to complete his hat-trick from close in. Incredibly, again from the restart, the Argyle defence were completely pulled out of position again and panic seemed to set in as another high ball in allowed Aaron Hulme room to fire home the equaliser. Okehampton then reverted to what they do best and started taking the game back to the home side and with eight minutes remaining, substitute Steve Kinsey played in Jack English who knocked in from a narrow angle. In stoppage time, Toby Gostling burst through to fire home from 25 yards and finally make the game safe.
Okehampton's midfield four of Jack English, Ed Squire, Toby Gostling and Luke Alden played tremendous attacking football throughout but man of the match goes to Royal Marine English in his last game for the club before a posting. His non-stop running and accurate passing will be hard to replace.
Okehampton Argyle have no match next Saturday while the Seconds are away to Bampton, kick-off 3pm.
200 club lottery winners for Saturday, October 6: 1, T Harris (number 18) £25; 2, J Gundry (no. 137) £10.
