St Ives 21
Tavistock 23
A SCRAPPY game saw Tavistock come away with the points.
The early pressure came from Tavistock as they forced a couple of penalties out wide in the home twenty two but nothing came of them. The first points came for the home side from a penalty kick as Tavistock were caught offside in front of the posts.
Breaks from Mark Friend and Danny Luffman were halted by some smart tackling. A pick up from a kick enabled Dougie Lloyd to put Lewis Edwards away but he was tackled 10 meter's short and the home side cleared.
A high tackle gave a penalty to Tavistock which Rich Goldsby-West kicked to level the score. A break by the home side was halted by a tremendous tackle by Ben Hadfield but he damaged his shoulder in the process and took no further part in the match.
Tavistock then took the lead as the home side were caught offside and Goldsby-West put over the kick. The home side levelled the score with another penalty kick.
The second half started brightly for Tavistock and another break by Edwards was foiled as he was tackled out. The home side then took the lead following a series of scrums close to the Tavistock line as the referee awarded a penalty try. Tavistock hit back and a tap penalty 15 metres from the home line set up a series of rucks and drives from which they went over with Goldsby-West getting the final touch and the conversion to level the scores.
A series of kicks then pushed the home side back and another infringement enabled Goldsby-West to kick Tavistock in to the lead. The home side then applied some pressure and levelled with another penalty kick.
Tavistock then had a stroke of good fortune as break by the home side set up a three against one and a try seemed certain but as the home player was tackled he threw a forward pass.
From the resulting scrum, St Ives turned over and an attempted drop goal went well wide. Tavistock then reclaimed the lead in great fashion.
A drive down the middle by the home was halted and Goldsby-West stole the ball, made some metres and then a superb pass to winger Danny Luffman put him away down the wing where he outpaced the defence to go in under the posts. Goldsby West converted.
With time running out the home side won a penalty ten metres out near the corner and from the tap drove over for a try. The conversion sailed wide and Tavistock ran out winners.
