OKEHAMPTON Youth Chorus celebrated the end of summer term with a free, informal afternoon concert in Fairplace Church.
The concert featured a wide range of traditional songs and children?s songs, which they spent the whole year learning, along with singing games, many of which were familiar to several generations in the audience.
Okehampton Youth Chorus is an after-school choir for Okehampton Primary School pupils, and currently boasts a membership ranging from eight to eleven years old.
It has been developed over the last two years by Wren, the specialist community and folk arts organisation based in Okehampton.
The chorus aims to develop young people?s voices and singing abilities, and to provide an understanding of traditional musical cultures. Singing from an early age also aids healthier breathing, and the development of self-confidence.
The chorus?s weekly sessions are led by Wren?s director Marilyn Tucker, along with Wren staff musician Matt Norman, and are designed to incorporate plenty of singing and games, along with the occasional concert, and, most important of all, fun.
The project will continue in the autumn term, thanks to the support of Arts Council England South West, Devon County Council, Youth Music, and the Okehampton (United) Education Foundation.
All who are interested in their children taking part in the autumn, or who wish to find out more about Okehampton Youth Chorus, should contact Wren, 1 St James Street, Okehampton, Devon EX20 1DW, tel: 01837 53754.
