A WEEK packed full of events, culminating in the popular Tavistock Carnival procession, was a huge success. Starting with the baby show on Saturday, July 12, the Lions Club of Tavistock presented the Carnival week, which saw the ever popular pavement artists and fun day in the Meadows — and for the first time this year The Bedford Hotel was the venue for many special events during the Carnival week. The Tavistock Carnival procession with the theme 'Yer havin' a laugh' was held on Saturday, July 19, and thankfully the rain stayed away — much to everyone's relief. President of the Lions Club Steve Grummitt said how successful the whole week had been. 'We were lucky the whole week with the weather and everything went to plan. It was a great week, well support events, and we all thoroughly enjoyed it,' he said. But he added that during the carnival procession he had lost his presidential medallion, so if anyone sees the gold and blue medallion with gold writing saying 'Lions International Tavistock' please call Steve on 01822 615526. Steve added a special thanks to the Bedford Hotel and to Tavistock Picture Framing Gallery for a donated prize for the carnival draw, which was by Roxanne Bell, worth approximately £1,800. The collection on the procession route, which took 20 people just under three hours to count, was £2,291.52 which was £122 up on last year. The collection consisted of 57,725 coins made up of 27,928 of 1p; 19,212, 2p; 5,844, 5p; 2,024, 10p; 1,852, 20p; 396, 50p; 443, £1; 26, £2; £70 in notes plus a selection of foreign coins. The profits will be distributed to the charity groups, clubs and schools that participated in the procession and the other events during Carnival Week. 2014 carnival results: Baby show (sponsored by Duke's Coffee House and Boots): Under 1 year winner: Lottie Squire of Tavistock; over 1 year winner: Taylor Coles of Tavistock.
