THE bridge that carries the River Walkham over the A386 between Grenofen and Horrabridge was built in 1822 as part of the new turnpike road from Tavistock to Plymouth.

It has always been formally known as Bedford Bridge because of the Duke of Bedford's involvement with the new road and his attendance at its official opening.

The bridge has, however, always been known by local people as Magpie Bridge. Can anyone help by telling me why?
