Kelly College U14 XV 25

Coombe Dean School U14 XV 15

THE day had a slight drizzle to it and the team had spent a wandering hour in the bus. This led them to play as if they had not woken up. But an early penalty score by Guy Jedwab was closely followed by Sam Twaites scoring a try, taking his tally to 25 this season.

Another penalty and try by Alex Dinner had Kelly comfortably ahead by 18 points.

Coombe Dean had not started to play and kicked a superb penalty from the halfway. This instigated a comeback by them and two tries, one converted, left Kelly a score away from losing.

The realisation of this led to better play and Harry Le Page, the captain, went over for a well-deserved try. Jedwab upped his total to 34 for the season with two conversions and two penalties and Lorne Bell led the pack with some outstanding rucking and tackling.

This was a good game to win and Kelly look forward to the second round against Sir John Hunt or Devonport High School for Boys.

THE KELLY players went out with something to prove and due to positional changes in the back line, places were up for grabs.

With the pack dominating rucks, the ball was flung out wide for Harry Wyatt to catch and run over for a simple score. The next score was due to quick thinking from Sam Twaites. He took a quick penalty and ran through a dazed opposition to give a perfectly timed pass to Harry Wyatt who trotted over for his second try of the afternoon.

Another powerful run by Twaites led to him going over for his sixth try of the season.

From the second half kick-off, the pack dominated again. The ball went wide and Harry Wyatt went over for his third score in the game. Good driving from the forwards constantly kept Exeter on the back foot and Harry Le Page sniped around the fringes to get a perfect scrum half try.

A loose pass, when an overlap was on, led to Exeter going over for a score then Wyatt steamed in for three more tries, the best where he avoided three tacklers with some clever footwork.

Guy Jedwab converted the last two tries and hit the bar from the touch line.

The backs received an immense amount of ball due to the hard work of the usually unsung forwards, Alex Dinner, Miles Amery, Alex Ng, Jon Harwood, Joe Murphy, Dominic McCarthy, Lorne Bell and Jack Newton.
