A veterinary nurse will be having her head shaved for charity at a coffee morning in town tomorrow (Saturday, September 15) in support of a colleague and good friend who has cancer.

Gemma Morley, who works as a veterinary nurse at Okeford Veterinary Centre in Okehampton, has already raised more than £600 for Target Ovarian Cancer.

She will tomorrow make the gesture in support of her colleague and friend Sarah Clark, the practice’s head nurse, who has ovarian cancer.

‘Sarah got diagnosed with ovarian cancer at the start of the year and she has gone through six sessions chemotherapy. She also has uterine cancer too and is due to start radiotherapy shortly,’ said Gemma.

‘Throughout this Sarah has maintained a positive outlook and determination to beat this disease.

‘She is a good friend too and is well-known to all the clients as she has worked for this practice for 30 years. I wanted to do something to help – and I don’t do running – so I thought this would be something that the practice and the clients could get involved in.

‘We will be doing a coffee morning and bake sale and I will be having my head shaved during that, by Gemma Timms, who is a local girl.’

As well as a sponsorship form in the practice reception, Gemma has a Just Giving site online, where she’s already smashed her £500 target with pledges online totalling £630. She also had a sponsorship form at the front desk of the practice.

‘There are actually two Gemma Morleys raising money for the same charity on the Just Giving site, but the other one is having a tattoo done,’ she said. ‘That’s not me!’
