THE 24 hour car park at Somerfield's in Tavistock could be closed at night following a recent spate of vandalism.

Sometime last weekend vandals ripped out electrical wiring, plunging four of the five floors into darkness.

The facility was closed on Monday night for repairs and because of concerns for safety in the darkened car park.

Somerfield duty manager Phil Layton said the car park was currently open all the time. 'But we are looking at closing it at 10.30pm, after the shop shuts,' he said. 'There has been graffiti, the lifts had been damaged and windows broken, especially over the last three weeks, but it's a constant battle against vandalism really.'

Mary Tindall, who is in charge of the car park for West Devon Borough Council, said she was surprised no one was electrocuted as it was potentially a very dangerous act.

She estimated the cost of repairing the damage could run into thousands of pounds and take council electricians several days.
