A VACANCY has this week been announced on Tavistock Town Council, following the recent resignation of Cllr Ian Jennings.

Cllr Jennings represented the town's South West ward. He has resigned from the council for personal and family reasons.

Members last week paid tribute to Cllr Jenning's hard work and commitment to his ward.

Cllr Mandy Govier, town mayor, asked the town clerk to send a letter to Cllr Jennings, wishing him well.

'We owe him a big vote of thanks,' she said.

Cllr Jenny Metcalf agreed.

'He has made a big contribution,' she said.

The vacancy has been advertised — a by-election will be held if ten electors from the ward ask for one within 14 days of the position being advertised.

If no-one demands an election, the vacancy will again be advertised and prospective councillors invited to apply for the position, from whom the council may co-opt a new member.

Col Roger Howard, town clerk, said due to the general election taking place today (Thursday) and the fact the town council has its parish meeting on May 13 and annual meeting on May 25, no moves were likely to be made to replace Cllr Jennings until June.
