Callington Town 1

Millbrook 3

CALLINGTON battled well against high riding opposition but paid the price for their lack of finishing as the visitors took charge in the second half.

Without regular keeper Andy Brenton, who injured his hand playing for Plymouth Argyle in the week, Town called upon reserve keeper Wayne Wormold to fill the breach. In addition they introduced new striker, 19-year-old Kevin Russell who had signed from Tavistock.

The first period was an even affair with both sides struggling to cope in wet and windy conditions.

But, with just two minutes gone of the second half, Millbrook hit the home side with two goals, effectively to kill off the game. Firstly, Mark Crowley capitalised on a defensive error to slide the ball past Wormold and 60 seconds later Paul Mildon converted a through ball from Wayne Tregenza.

Late on, Russell converted a twice taken penalty kick to reduce the arrears but, as the home side chased the equaliser, Millbrook broke and when Lee Cansfield was upended in the box, he coolly converted the spot kick to secure the points.

Duchy League Premier Division Cup first round

Callington Town 2

Godolphin Atlantic 1

PLAYING in atrocious conditions at Duchy College, Callington Town gained a psychological advantage over Godolphin ahead of this weekend's Cornwall Junior Cup semi-final clash.

The wind blew directly down the ground throughout making any ball difficult to control but it was the home side, playing against the elements, who coped better in the first period. When they kept the ball on the ground, they showed skill worthy of a higher league and deserved their 1-0 lead at the break courtesy of a fine finish from teenager Stuart Taylor.

For most of the second period, the visitors were pegged in their own half due to a combination of Callington pressure and the prevailing storm but did break out once and, thanks to lacklustre defending, managed to equalise.

With time running out, Barford and Truscott combined to force an error in the Atlantic defence and the ball beat the Godolphin keeper to secure the win for Callington, Truscott claiming the goal.

l Callington second team face the most important match of their season on Saturday when they travel to Godolphin Atlantic for the Cornwall Junior Cup Eastern Section semi-final, (kick off 2pm, coach leaves New Road car park at 12 noon).
