STALLholders at Tavistock's pannier market rallied round to help a fellow trader last week after she had her day's takings stolen.
Alison Renton, owner of Fishy Business, was away from her stall for a few moments last Tuesday when a thief nipped in and stole an entire day's takings — some £100 — from her bag.
Next door neighbour café owner Bob Vella organised a collection to help cover the loss.
'It was a joint effort from all the traders and some customers,' said Bob. 'We had a good response and raised £124.'
Alison was overcome when Bob gave her the money at the end of last week.
'I'm so gob-smacked. I think they're all wonderful. I dearly appreciate it; they didn't have to do this, I didn't expect it at all. I just can't thank them enough,' she said.
Alison said the thief took a bank bag with the money in from her bag, ignoring her purse, which was next to it, and a box, also full of money.
'So it probably wasn't a stranger, who would have just grabbed the bag and run out the door,' she said.
The traders say they have an idea who might have stolen the purse and they are appealing for anyone with more information to contact WPC Ransley at Tavistock police station on 0990 777444.
