A CALL to ban alcohol in Tavistock town centre was pressed on councillors at their meeting in the town last week.
John Taylor, chairman of Tavistock Forward who lives in the centre of the town, had raised the matter at a recent police meeting.
Mr Taylor last Tuesday told councillors that the drinking of alcohol in the streets of Bere Alston had already been banned there, a move directed by West Devon Borough Council. He asked members if they would back the same policy in Tavistock.
He said: ?Without the support of the town council, I don?t think it would have a chance of success.
?As the largest property owners in the town, and also the Meadows, where I dread to think what the damages are related to alcohol-related incidents, would the town council be prepared to support such an idea??
Cllr Alison Clish-Green, who is also a member of the borough council, said there was ?certainly room to work together? on the issue.
?I would thoroughly support such a move,? she said.
Cllr Ted Sherrell said Mr Taylor had made a ?very fair point? regarding the drinking of alcohol in the streets of Tavistock.
He proposed the issue should be debated at the next meeting of the town?s finance and general purposes committee. The proposal was seconded by Cllr Clish-Green.
It is due to be tabled at the committee?s meeting on November 30. The clerk will also write to the police to ask if they would support such a ban.
