A DECISION to have further discussions about the creation of a car park on land in Pixon Lane, Tavistock, was thrown out last week, after town councillors agreed to keep a watching brief on parking availability in the town. The unmade land, owned by the town council but leased by Tavistock Livestock Market, was the subject of an offer by West Devon Borough Council recently. The borough wanted to pay for the creation of a car park on the land ? in return, it would offer the council half of any pay and display income over £10,000 per year. The offer was rejected by the town council last month, after receiving advice from its surveyors. Last week, following a request from the borough to reconsider the issue, members of the town?s properties committee agreed further discussions should take place. But at last week?s full council meeting, members rejected the recommendation. Cllr Iain Andrews, chairman of the properties committee, said: ?I think one of the important things is to think through ideas to progress the car park in-house. If we wished to move in that direction it should be advantageous to the town, not the borough.? Cllr Peter Jones said the town council should ?definitely? be thinking about developing the land itself. ?I think a new car park in the town should be providing income for the town and certainly not for the borough,? he said. Cllr David Farrant said he believed the public felt the town was not interested in the creation of a new car park on Pixon Lane, when this was not the case. And Cllr Norma Woodcock said if the town council created a car park on the land, it could make sure it linked in with the use of the cattle market. The council agreed the status quo regarding the Pixon Lane land should remain for the next six months to a year ? in the meantime, the clerk and works superintendent would investigate how much it would cost to tarmac the land and mark it out as a car park.
