Tavistock U15s 24 Honiton U15s 20 THE home side put in a superb team performance in this closely contested first-round match of the inaugural Devon Plate Competition. In the opening 15 minutes Tavistock ran in two tries with one conversion and it looked as if they were in for an easy ride ? despite the formidable size of the opposition. Honiton responded with a well taken try but at the end of the half Tavistock hit back again, to take the scores to 17-5. Although Honiton scored early in the second half, they then seemed to lose their focus which resulted in Tavistock crossing the line a fourth time, and the conversion was added. The final quarter was nail-biting as Honiton added first one then another try to their tally but could not make the conversions. Although the final whistle was greeted with great relief, Tavistock never really looked in danger of losing this tie ? thanks to the huge passion and commitment shown by all the players. Torquay U13s 0 Tavistock U13s 42 DESPITE the score line Torquay played very well in the set pieces and had some strong individual runs. The Tavistock forwards secured the loose ball efficiently and scrum half Jack Haigh delivered quality supply to the line moving the ball out quickly time after time. Winger Phillip Snell ran in the first try from a third phase ball. A 20 metre tap and go penalty saw Joe Hair off load to Callum Thompson for the next. Number eight Mark Friend ran off the back of the scrum to release full back Jack Morgan to score in the corner. Only minutes into the second half Callum Thompson broke through a ruck 10 metres inside the Tavistock half and beat a Torquay defender to the posts for his second. The rest of the match Tavistock rampaged through Torquay keeping the ball alive with great support and passing resulting in three more tries from Dan Oner, George Rodgers and finally hooker Sam Straughan. Elliot Hoyte, Jack Morgan and Rufus Gould made conversions. This week the squad travel to Cullompton. Tavistock U12s 45 Exeter Chiefs U12s 0 TAVISTOCK put on a vintage display of attacking rugby to avenge a narrow defeat when the two teams last met. From the kick off the Tavistock forwards seized possession. Hallam Bourton at full back linked well and scored the second try after a prolonged period of pressure, and Alistair Dawe scored a trade mark bruising forwards try to deflate Exeter. The second half saw more of the same with Louis Ferguson replacing his brother to excellent effect, and the backs ran in four more tries many from deep positions. Three of those tries came from the usual suspects in the back division. The fourth try came from Edward Ames at scrum half, when he seized on the ball twenty yards out and evaded several desperate tackles to score. Overall this was another great performance which owed so much to magnificent forward play. Jack Coilly, recently returned to the side, was an awesome forward and Harry Birt at lock played with great energy and determination. Tavistock U10s 10 Eexeter Chiefs U10s 20 TAVISTOCK?S efforts were not helped by a very muddy pitch, which didn?t allow the running display of the last few weeks. Despite good solid tackling Tavistock found themselves 15 points to nil down at half time. Then came the fight back. Tavistock?s work rate improved and the scores came. Josh Birch inevitably scored the first of Tavistock?s tries and a great driving maul led to Tavistock?s second by Aaron Dobie. The final whistle came before Tavistock could score again. Leaking the early three tries cost Tavistock dearly.
