MEMORIES came flooding back last Saturday, when more than 50 former students of Tavistock Grammar School got together to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the year they first started at the school.
Travelling from such far-flung places as Melbourne and Sydney in Australia and Chile in South America, the 54 former students accompanied by 21 guests, enjoyed lunch at the Moorland Links Hotel in Yelverton.
The event was organised by Hilary Shepherd, Jeanne Loader and John Owen, who spent 18 months researching the whereabouts of their old school friends ? about 100 in all. Amazingly, they managed to locate all but six.
Seven former teachers were also traced although only one was able to attend ? physics teacher Don Sleep.
Ted Sherrell, a borough and Tavistock town councillor who was one of those attending the reunion, said it was ?a marvellous afternoon?.
?It really was very good, with all of us seeing people we hadn?t seen for possibly more than forty or more years, so there were plenty of reminiscences and nostalgia,? said Ted.
?It was a brilliant effort on the part of the organisers. They did a tremendous amount and the detective work they went to was incredible, specially for women whose names had changed. It was brilliant and I think everyone enjoyed it.?
Some of the group had such a good time they met up for a walk on the following morning, followed by lunch at The Leaping Salmon in Horrabridge.
The organisers said it was ?certainly a weekend to remember? and they hoped another event could be organised in the future.
l Pupils still not traced are Keith A Brown, Philip Cartwright, Jeffery Hughes, Brian Norsworthy, Jean Opie and Christopher J Stephens.
Any readers who know of their whereabouts is asked to call John Owen on 01822 853989.
