TIM Hawkins was elected club captain and Richard Wraith, vice-captain at the annual meeting of Tavistock Golf Club. 'I am delighted to have been elected captain and to be representing the club in our community' Tim told members in his acceptance speech, ' Together, with my vice-captain, we look forward to an exciting, busy and, hopefully, successful golfing year and to a full social calendar. 'In particular I look foward to raising funds for my two chosen charities, St Luke's Hospice and the British Limbless Ex-Servicemen's Association. Our Charity Day is on September 27. We shall also be holding an open day on September 20 when, hopefully, we will meet many members of the local community.' The traditional Captain's Drive In was held a few days later when the new club captain and lady captain Norma Thewlis, together with the new vice- captain and lady vice-captain Sue Bailey, led a large field of players in this popular event. The winners were Alan Gawman and Nick Mier with 42 points, second Ray Steer and Mike Apps with 41 points closely followed by Mike Beveridge and Dave Burge with 40 points. The ladies' section held their first open of the year, a four ball better ball team event. This popular format always attracts players from many clubs. Though the sun shone throughout the day the strong winds made for exhausting rounds of golf! The worthy winners with 78 points were Kay King and Kath Mansell from Okehampton and Penny Deacon and Rosemary Cook from Tavistock. Second with 77 points were Frances Ryan, Liz Lindon, Marie Watson and Sheila Vivien from Staddon Hts, St Mellion and Yelverton. In third place from Tavistock were Sue Coles, Jenny Bryant, Fran Horton and Peggy Burge with 76 points. Fourth were another Tavistock team, Judy Harris, Margot Angel, Lyn Alderman and Ginny Samborne with 70 points. Best visitor team: Jane Small, Sian Clarke, Kathy McBain and Jill Newbury with 71 points from Exeter and the best home team, with 70 points were Bev Ruth, Nicky Gawman, Maggie Hillman, Wendy Wroe. l A record 176 players entered the four ball better ball Tavistock Veteran Men's Open on Wednesday May 7. On a glorious, sunny day, the field included visitors from 24 clubs in Devon and Cornwall, all competing for prizes worth more than £1,000. Winners for the visitors were the last pair out, M Kirkham and W Bailey from Exeter with 43 points. Runners-up were M Smith and K Westaway from Whitsand Bay, and 3rd were R Cragg and N Wallace from Bude. The home players' competition could not have been more close with the top three pairs all on 42. Winners on countback to the last two were M Huber and M Gill, with runners-up D Anthony and M Coles, and third J Greeening and F Bailey.
