SIX male carers, with little or no skills in the kitchen, undertook an eight week cookery course recently, with the help of Tavistock Area Support Services (TASS).
In Partnership with Westbank (Devon Carers), TASS developed a cookery masterclass with a difference.
The intrepid six came from Tavistock and outlying areas and learned how to prepare, cook and then eat their meals with thanks to Sue Champion and Heather Rayne from TASS.
Each week menus were discussed, making sure the meals were what they liked to eat, with plenty of variety and nutrition.
Manager at TASS Andy Lyle said: 'Sue Champion, tutor, and Heather and Derrick Rayne, assistant volunteer and dishwasher, turned Master Chef into something special for local people.
'The smells in the Anchorage Centre each Tuesday morning have been mouth-watering and to see all six create a final masterpiece at the end of it was something very special.'
One of the carers taking part said: 'It just shows what six men can achieve in the kitchen.
'We have had an amazing time and learned so much.
'We now need a follow up so as to keep improving and help us avoid the takeaways!
'Perhaps we'll have a bake-off next.
'Sue and Heather were amazing, with so much patience and understanding.
'It is amazing what you can do when you put your mind to it.'
TASS hopes to run the cookery course again in the New Year and anyone who is a carer and is interested should contact the Anchorage Centre on 01822 616958.
