ONE of the biggest ever quiz nights staged in Tavistock raised around £1,000 for wounded servicemen last weekend.

The Ordulph Arms and Terrace Restaurant hosted a multimedia 'quiz of the year' to raise money for BLESMA, the British Limbless Ex-Servicemen's Association. The charity was chosen by the pub landlord Andy Coad.

One hundred and four people entered the quiz, and their efforts alongside a charity auction and raffle raised around £1,000 on the night.

Punters answered questions on a variety of topics, including the James Bond films, children's television, as well as two musical intro rounds.

Organisers Hannah Rowlands, Hallam Riggs and Richard Wright said they were very pleased with the turn-out and the amount raised. It was not the first quiz organised by the team — in 2011, they raised around £1,000 for teenager Alex Phipps, a sufferer of Emanuel Syndrome.

Hannah Rowlands said: 'We are so pleased with how the quiz night has gone this year. After the success of the event in 2011, we were asked to come back and organise another fundraising quiz.

'The turn out was brilliant on the night, and things ran very smoothly. Thanks to Richard's technical wizardry, we had projectors and the microphone keeping everyone clued in.

'We are really pleased not only to have raised so much but to be able to promote the worthwhile work of BLESMA, and everyone who came was fantastic.

'Overall, it's not bad at all for one night!'

Landlord Andy Coad said: 'I am very happy to choose BLESMA as the charity to support this year. Britain's servicemen and woman are heroes, and there should be more done to recognise them and all ex-military personnel.'

Hallam, Hannah and Richard expressed thanks to Andy Coad and Jane Trevan of the Ordulph Arms for hosting the event, everyone who attended, and all the local businesses who supported the event by donating prizes for the auction and raffle.
