OKEHAMPTON Auctions enjoyed another successful day with almost 1,000 lots coming under the hammer at the Market Hall last Wednesday.
Some notable prices were achieved including £680 for a pretty Edwardian salon suite which well exceeded the pre-sale estimate. It was beautifully upholstered in deep red velvet with gold braid trim by the vendor, who was a professional upholsterer.
An unusual 19th century folding writing slope — of Madeiran origin — inlaid with scenes of bullock car transport — sold for £250, also in excess of expectations.
Another 'overseas visitor' in the form of an early 20th century carved camphorwood chest went for £200.
Among the smaller items on offer were an antique wrought iron oil and wick chamber lamp sold for £51, a brass and bead firescreen used by ladies to prevent the preferred ivory complexion being reddened by sitting close to the fire for £65, a small French brass carriage clock for £160, a Royal Doulton character jug for £36 and a handsome china pig for £28.
Proprietor Michael Lewis and regular auctioneer Martin Bellamy, shared the selling duties with Caroline Shaw, Michael's assistant. It was the first time Okehampton has had a female auctioneer.
