YOU have devoted many column inches to the 'rural-gateway' on the Whitchurch-Grenofen Road, but I would like to respond briefly to some of the concerns of your still-unhappy correspondents.

The gateway was primarily designed for the benefit of residents, to control the type and speed of traffic entering the urban sections of Whitchurch Road (see Times, Sept 28) .

However, since part of Whitchurch Road is to be used for Route 27 of the National Cycle Network (NCN), on which low vehicle speeds are also desirable, the opportunity was taken to draw in national sources of funding for some of the work, and 'kill two birds with one stone'.

With over 500 new houses planned to be built in Tavistock during the next 10 years, traffic congestion is likely to increase. Any improvements in infrastructure which will encourage short-distance travel by walking and cycling will benefit those who need uncongested roads to drive on.

The NCN is being constructed like a jigsaw puzzle and some of the individual pieces can look rather odd and disjointed. I ask your readers to be patient; there is an overall vision which will work.
