AS someone who lives on Whitchurch Road, within sight of Chollacott Lane, I beg to differ with Tom Keene (Letters, June 8) about the traffic problems he perceives. In my opinion the issue is not one of speed. Yes, there is the odd idiot as there is on any highway, but the vast majority of traffic passes the bottom of Chollacott Lane at well below 30 mph. No, the problem is one of driver incompetence. There are too many drivers who don?t know how wide their car is, or how long, who don?t look ahead beyond the next parked car, and who drive along the gutter instead of taking the crest of the road to improve their line of sight. Then there are the ditherers. Pulling out of driveways and side roads, they stick their bumper out for a minute or two - without pulling far enough forward to actually see what?s coming - before they lurch out in front of other traffic and invisible cyclists. Let?s hope that the council, if they feel obliged to do anything, do not take the most obvious (but idiotic) step of stopping on-road parking on Whitchurch Road, thereby speeding up traffic by 5 to 10 mph.
