THE COMPANY behind bringing a Tesco to Tavistock said it was pleased that it could now move forward with its proposals following legal action being dropped over the planning decision. An application for a judicial review into the planning consent, granted by West Devon Borough Council in January, was refused because the judge felt that the authority had not acted in any way that was procedurally unfair. The action had been brought by borough councillor Robert Oxborough, in collaboration with Morrisons, after he claimed he was prevented from speaking at the planning meeting due to a procedural error. Jonathan James of Marchfield Properties, which owns the former Focus building in Plymouth Road which will be transformed into a Tesco store over the coming months, said: 'We are pleased that, after this short delay, we can now move forward with our proposals to finally bring this prominent site back into economic use and deliver much needed investment for Tavistock and new jobs for local people.  'We look forward to working with Tesco to ensure the new store can be open as soon as possible.' Although an opening date for the store has not been confirmed, a Tesco spokesperson said: 'We cannot wait to open our doors and start serving customers. We have already received a large number of job enquiries from local residents. 'We are looking forward to recruiting our team and becoming an active part of the Tavistock community.'
