TAVISTOCK Tennis Club held a well attended annual meeting last Thursday.

Chairman David Isaac reported that last year had been a good one with a full programme of activities, covering participation in league competitions, club tournaments, friendly matches, social events and club sessions.

Membership stood at 245 overall. The courts had been well used, which included play during the day and visitors were impressed with club facilities. Three courts had been resurfaced by contractors and the premises well maintained by members.

David formally introduced new club coach Linden Hardistry, who has settled in well and made a good start with group coaching of juniors and is available for coaching seniors on a one-to -one basis.

He expressed thanks to the president, town mayor Norma Woodcock, for all her help and support. He then thanked the committee and others for all they do in running the club, with particular reference to Ken Watkins, who at short notice took on the responsibility of ?House? following the resignation of Dick Symes last year. Ken has served the club loyally in many ways for almost 50 years.

Mike Jefferies, member for juniors, said the club had the second largest junior section in Devon and thanked all the parents who helped with transport for away matches. He went on to express a vote of thanks for the coaching work of Jon Reeder with juniors who had resigned from the club to pursue another career.

Officers reported on activities. There had been a good entry for club tournaments with some new winners. In the league it had been a mediocre year for both juniors and seniors but there had been some good matches with close results.

The trial system of two teams being promoted and two demoted in seniors competitions had been successful, and is to be continued this year.

There were 18 enjoyable friendly matches and the usual three good social events: pre-season skittles match, a barbecue and the annual dinner.

Finances were healthy but there was a need to ensure sufficient funds were available to meet major maintenance work like the ongoing resurfacing of the other courts, new developments and general increases in costs which require an increase of subscriptions.

Existing officers were re-elected to the committee. David Isaac said he would fill the chair for the year but a successor must be found. Norma Woodcock would continue as president.
