A TAVISTOCK woman is running the Liverpool Marathon this Sunday (May 20) to help raise money for a young boy’s operation which could give him the chance to walk.
Amber-Leigh Parsons is stepping out of her comfort zone and running the 26.2 miles for three-year-old Fynn, who has cerebral palsy (CP).
Amber-Leigh said: ‘I am raising money for Fynn who has CP but he has the chance to walk with an operation. The operation is very expensive but this is not available on the NHS.’
Fynn is an identical twin, born in August 2014, and from an early age it became apparent that Fynn was not reaching his milestones and was unable to support himself — it was soon confirmed that Fynn had spastic cerebral palsy, which makes his muscles stiff and has muscle spasms.
In May last year, the family learned that Fynn would be suitable for ‘selective dorsal rhizotomy (SDR)’ which would mean that most of Fynn’s painful spasms would cease and would lead to him being able to walk unaided — unfortunately the cost of £38,000 would have to be met by the family.
Amber-Leigh has been training for the marathon with her mum Jane Martin and step-dad Andrew for the past six months, shortly after having her daughter.
‘I normally run for Cardiac Risk in the Young in memory of my brother Jason, but Fynn’s story really touched my heart, being a mum myself. I met the family earlier this year and asked if I could run for Fynn, to which they were delighted, so I really hope toa do this and do the family proud.
‘Fynn really is the sweetest little boy and really deserves this operation — he is always smiling regardless with his twin brother.’
