TAVISTOCK Town Council has made the wedding dreams of a bride-to-be come true after agreeing to fulfil a special request.

Suzy Stewart and Simon Reid are getting married at St Eustachius’ Church this Saturday (November 25) and having their wedding reception at Tavistock Town Hall.

The couple, who have been together for 24 years and have three children, booked their wedding back in January to coincide with Dickensian Evening and the switch-on of the town’s Christmas lights. However, with this year’s Dickensian Evening being moved back a week to take place on the first Friday in December, the town’s Christmas lights were not due to be on during the day.

Following a request on social media to see if there was any way the lights could be switched on for their big day, Tavistock Town Council and Tavistock Business Improvement District (BID) have agreed to switch the lights on for a short period of time on Saturday.

Suzy said: ‘We booked in January 2017 and it was to coincide with Dickensian Evening and lights being turned on.

‘I found out that they changed the date of Dickensian Evening later on through the year but I thought they would definitely have the lights on by the time of the wedding.

‘I only found out later that the lights were being turned on December 1. I was completely devastated. Tavistock is just so magical with the Christmas lights on.

‘After hearing from Lisa Piper (BID) and Ross Ayling for the town hall, I was absolutely delighted that the lights will be on for a small duration. This will make our wedding bright and beautiful and not in the dark.

‘A big thank you to everyone that has helped and supported us to make our day extra special. Simon, our three children Emily, Josie, Michael and I are all really excited and happy.’

Tavistock BID manager Lisa Piper first heard about Suzy’s request through Facebook and informed the team at Tavistock Town Council. She said she was really pleased that the lights would be switched on early for the couple.

A spokesperson for Tavistock Town Council said: ‘Tavistock Town Council, along with the BID and the Lions Club of Tavistock, are pleased to work together to switch the lights on to make Suzy and Simon’s wedding day that extra bit special for them.

‘We have decided to take into account the special nature of this request and switch the lights on for a couple of hours, to offer the wedding party an opportunity to take photos and enjoy the atmosphere it creates.

‘The town hall team are looking forward to hosting Suzy and Simon’s special day and will continue to work hard to ensure that everyone has an enjoyable day.’
