GIRLS and leaders from 3rd Tavistock Brownies recently celebrated the unit’s 85th birthday.

The group enjoyed chocolate cake, played games and posed for a new unit photograph.

A journal kept by the leaders when the unit was first formed in 1931 is held in the division archive and the current crop of Brownies were fascinated to read entries from the journal giving a unique insight into the past. The journal describes how the unit was formed, includes details of every meeting from 1931-35 and closures during outbreaks of diptheria and scarlet fever. They were amazed by how life was different for Brownies 85 years ago and equally by how much of the Brownie traditions are carried on in the modern day.

The Tavy Division is looking for adult volunteers to join the team. Anyone who is interested, or would like some more information, can contact Mrs Rica Olver, division commissioner, on 07817 460733 or email [email protected]
