PEOPLE wanting to attend events at the Anchorage Centre in Tavistock will hopefully now have more space to park after West Devon Borough Councillor Kirstie Clish-Green successfully moved that the existing ten-minute grace period in the Chapel Street car park be abolished.

The move came following representation from local disabled and elderly people about parking problems in Chapel Street car park.

Cllr Clish-Green said: 'I hope this will help those who really need a car parking space to attend events at the Anchorage Centre. Penalty charge notices will now be issued to those who park without displaying a ticket.'

General manager of Tavistock Area Support Services based in the Anchorage Centre, Andy Lyle, said: 'The congestion of Chapel Street car park has been an ongoing problem for those attending the Anchorage Centre and it has highlighted the need for additional disabled parking bays — one bay allocated for disabled drivers.

'With the development of Shopmobility and the need for disabled people to park close to the centre, the bays are essential, helping people not only access the service at the centre but also the ability to access the shops and the Meadows in Tavistock.

'I am grateful to Cllr Kirstie Clish-Green for highlighting this problem and hope that in due course additional disabled parking bays will be allocated.'

West Devon Borough Cllr Alison Clish-Green said: 'When I was mayor I helped launch Shopmobility — we really should have additional disabled parking facilities in this location.

'We will keep campaigning for better parking facilities for those who really need them, both in the town centre and at the Anchorage Centre.'
