THE TAR barrel pulling team at this weekend's Hatherleigh Carnival will be hard to flamin' miss in their new specially-designed T-shirts. This year, the Hatherleigh tar barrel committee have decided all pullers should be easily identified in advance for safety and insurance reasons. The 16 runners in the team for the two flaming tar barrel pulls on Saturday, November 11, will sport identical t-shirts. The new shirts were unveiled last Saturday, at a secret location in the town where the freshly tarred barrels are kept. The design features a half tone picture of last year's pull, together with some text and the date. The t-shirts have been designed in conjunction with Winkleigh Cider, whose new strapline 'Tis a Devon Thing' is on the back. Dougal Stevens, a member of the tar barrels committee for more than 30 years, said: 'Each year we try to make our pulls safer and more secure without taking away any of the excitement and thrills. 'This year our team of runners has agreed to wear special t-shirts and that means that we know in advance who is pulling the flaming tar barrels. 'It also means that anyone who just turns up and wants to join in will be noticed and, unfortunately, they will not be allowed to participate this year. With safety and insurance now top of the agenda we must have full confidence in our team. It is a way of protecting the future of this tradition.' The first tar barrel pull takes place through the town streets at 5am, the second around 9pm to 10pm to mark the end of carnival. Each tar barrel run starts at the top of Market Street and proceeds via High Street, South Street and Bridge Street to finish in the market, where a bonfire is set from the remains. Thousands of people line the streets to watch the spectacle. Earlier in the evening, the main carnival procession featuring a host of colourful floats will set off around the town. At 7.15pm, the massed bands including Hatherleigh Silver Band, Okehampton Excelsior Band and Torrington Silver Band will march up through the town in preparation for the start of the main procession 15 minutes later. The children's procession and the shop window competition are judged earlier in the day. This year's carnival queen is 17-year-old Hannah Winser, a student at Okehampton College. This year's prince and princess are Jack Moyes and Chelsea Connor.
