A TAVISTOCK mother this week appealed to motorists to take extra care when driving over zebra crossings in the town, following several dangerous incidents. Bindy Heneghan, chairman of Tavistock Community Pre-School Group at the Alexander Centre, said she had received reports from many mothers at the group who have had to snatch their children back from the crossing in Plymouth Road, because drivers have ignored them . She said: ?The cars just aren?t stopping there. There are also disabled people who use that crossing to get to and from the Alexander Centre and elderly people at Drakes Mead House, plus the nursery at Sunningdale. ?A lot of mothers have said they have had to pull their children off the road outside St Rumon?s as well, at the Texaco crossing and at the traffic lights outside the post office.? Mrs Heneghan said she thought drivers were possibly not paying attention in the Alexandra Centre area because the road was long and straight and they were accelerating away from the roundabout. She appealed to motorists to pay more attention to crossing sites. ?Because I know about the problem I really look out for cars but there?s always that one time when you might get distracted, particularly if you have several children with you,? she said. Sgt Bob Hughes, of Tavistock Police, said he was not aware there was a problem at the crossings, but he urged anyone witnessing such incidents to tell the police. ?If any person sees a vehicle failing to give way on a crossing, make a note of the registration number and we will investigate,? he said. Sgt Hughes added that he would ask the traffic warden to keep an eye out at crossings in the town.
